Swivel Head Dolls. A Swivel Head is a variation of the Shoulder Head. It has a head and shoulder plate but the neck area is divided. The neck of the head ends in a ball shape which fits into a cup cast into the neck area and plate. The two pieces are usually held together by a metal bar which runs from the head down into the body. The cup is usually lined with kid to prevent rubbing and scuff marks on the neck end of the head and to ensure a smooth movement. Reference: Understanding Dolls by Caroline G Goodfellow.

Wooden dolls are probably some of the earliest examples of dolls. “Paddle Dolls” are some of the earliest, found in the tombs at Egypt. These “Paddle Dolls” were not likely to have been made for children but were more fertility items. Wooden dolls more likely to be collected by doll collectors are the wooden dolls often referred to as Dutch dolls.

Simon & Halbig existed between 1869 and 1939 in Germany. Possibly later.

The tinted and untinted bisque shoulder heads with molded hair and delicate decoration are typical of the prodigious output of fine quality dolls produced by this manufacturer. Kid-bodied shoulder heads originally made in the 1880’s followed closely in the French tradition, with large often paperweight eyes, pierced ears and heavy brows.

Mouths can be open or closed. Simon & Halbig registered several new ideas including those operated by a lever, movable eyelids, the use of thread for eyelashes and glazing the neck of a socket head doll to reduce friction between the neck and the body socket.

Simon & Halbig made dolls heads for many other companies including C M Bergmann, Carl Berger, Kammer & Reinhardt, and SFBJ

Charles Perrault was born in Paris on 12 January 1628, the seventh child of Pierre Perrault, a lawyer at the Parlement of Paris. After an excellent education at the College of Beauvais, rue Jean de Beauvais to Paris, he was admitted to the bar in 1651. He soon abandoned after the bar and became a clerk of his elder brother, Pierre, Receiver General of Finance in Paris.

He laid the foundations for a new literary genre, the fairy tale, with his works derived from pre-existing folk tales. The best known of his tales include Le Petit Chaperon rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), Cendrillon (Cinderella), Le Chat Botté (Puss in Boots), La Belle au bois dormant (The Sleeping Beauty) and La Barbe bleue (Bluebeard). Jumeau Dolls – Jumeau was a French company, founded in the early 1840s, which designed and manufactured high quality bisque dolls. It was founded by Louis-Desire Belton and Pierre-François Jumeau in the Maison Jumeau of Montreuil-sous-Bois, near Paris, France. While Belton did not remain with the company for long, under Jumeau’s leadership (and later, under the leadership of his son, Emile), the company soon gained a reputation for dolls with beautiful faces and “exquisite” clothing which replicated the popular fashions of the time.

The Jumeau company first emerged as a partnership between Louis-Desire Belton and Pierre-François Jumeau in Paris in the early 1840s. In 1844, Belton and Jumeau presented their dolls at the Paris Exposition (at which they received an honorable mention), but by 1846 Belton’s name was no longer associated with the dolls, and Jumeau was trading in his own right. A bronze medal in the 1849 Paris Exposition followed, as did an appearance at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851, at which the company was awarded a First Place Medal. Through much of this period, the firm sold only their own dolls to wholesalers, although during the 1850s and 1860s, the company moved into selling wax dolls imported from Britain.

Dean’s Rag Book Company. Dean’s Rag Book Co was founded in 1903 by Mr Henry Samuel Dean as a subsidiary of the printing and publishing firm Dean & Son, which had been in business since the eighteenth century.

The Rag Book Co introduced a revolutionary concept in children’s books by making them out of cloth. The success of the cloth books led Mr Dean to producing rag dolls on sheets of cloth. They were patented in 1908 and carried Dean’s famous trade-mark, designed by Stanley Berkley, of an English terrier and an English bulldog having a tug-of-war with a rag book, along with the slogan ‘Wear Ever – Tear Never’. The patent was for a cloth cut-out doll made with six pieces, two for the front, two for the back and two for the feet, which could be painted or printed on calico, linen or other materials. The made-up doll, labelled ‘Dean’s Rag Knockabout Toy Sheet. Washable and Hygienic. Reference: The Collector’s Guide to British Dolls Since 1920.
